Queen Rearing, Breeding and Banking in Nigeria: A Practical Guide for Tropical Africa
Bridging the gap between honey bee science and the practicalities of queen rearing in Nigeria and tropical Africa for beekeepers, researchers, and agripreneurs.
About the Author
Taiwo Amoo is a passionate beekeeper, agriculturalist, entrepreneur, and lifelong advocate for animal breeding and genetic improvement. His interests lie in the areas of breeding, agriculture, honey bee biology and business development. This confluence of interests, and his desire to promote practical beekeeping knowledge in Africa, led him to write Queen Rearing, Breeding and Banking in Nigeria: A Practical Guide for Tropical Africa.
Taiwo has a BSc in Animal Breeding and Genetics from the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (now the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB)), a BBA from the Pilon School of Business at Sheridan College’s Hazel McCallion Campus and an MBA from the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, Canada. He is currently a PhD candidate in Agribusiness at Lead City University, Ibadan, focusing on agricultural innovation, modern beekeeping commercialization, and the development of sustainable enterprises.
Taiwo is a Certified Journeyman Beekeeper through the University of Montana’s beekeeping certification programme, an important milestone in his journey toward becoming a Certified Master Beekeeper. His beekeeping experience spans both Canada and Nigeria, giving him valuable exposure to different honey bee populations, production environments, and management practices.
As founder of Sandalwood Apiaries (established in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria in 2020), Taiwo has a particular interest in queen rearing, selective breeding, queen banking, colony multiplication, and developing practical beekeeping equipment for African conditions. He sees tremendous potential in Africa’s wide variety of honey bee populations for scientific research, sustainable commercial beekeeping, rural enterprise and agripreneurship.
Through this book, Taiwo aims to bridge the gap between the existing body of honey bee science and the practicalities of queen rearing in Nigeria and tropical Africa. His intention is to provide beekeepers, researchers, students and agro-entrepreneurs with the knowledge to produce high-quality queens, to improve the locally adapted bee stocks and to establish commercially viable apiaries.
Beyond his academic and professional pursuits, Taiwo is happily married and a proud father. He values family, lifelong learning, entrepreneurship, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to agricultural development in Africa.
