Everything you need to know before attending a hands-on beekeeping or hive-craft workshop at Sandalwood Apiaries.
Not at all! Our Basics of Modern Langstroth Beekeeping and Beginner Hands-On Bee Yard Practical workshops are specifically designed for complete beginners with zero prior experience. If you already manage hives and want to multiply your colonies or raise your own queens, we recommend our Advanced Colony Splitting & Queen Rearing Masterclass.
All classroom and live bee yard training sessions take place at the Sandalwood Apiaries Training & Demonstration Apiary in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. We provide sanitized, ventilated beekeeping veils/jackets, sting-resistant gloves, and hive tools for every participant—simply wear closed-toe boots (covering your ankles) and full-length trousers.
Yes! Our School, University & Cooperative Group Apiary Experience accommodates 15 to 25 participants per session and is tailored for primary/secondary STEM excursions, university agriculture faculties, and state farming cooperatives.
Every practical beekeeping workshop includes our printed Sandalwood Apiaries Field Management Handbook, a seasonal Nigerian nectar-flow calendar, and an official Certificate of Practical Completion. In our Make & Take craft workshops (Beeswax Candle Making, Honey Extraction, and Propolis/Balm Formulation), you also take home the products you craft in class.
Absolutely. Workshop attendees receive same-day access to our Ibadan equipment warehouse with specialist guidance to help you select the right Langstroth hive kit, smoker, extractor, or nucleus colony reservation.
Our Ibadan facility includes both an indoor demonstration classroom and covered apiary staging areas; if heavy tropical rain prevents opening live hives safely, we provide a priority rain-check session. Because class sizes are capped for hands-on mentorship, registrations are pre-paid and non-refundable, but you may transfer your seat once to a future date with at least 7 days’ notice.
Educational Beekeeping Workshops
At Sandalwood Apiaries, we are passionate about empowering both first-time hobbyists and commercial agricultural producers through structured, hands-on beekeeping education. Founded in 2020 at our training and breeding apiary in Ibadan, Oyo State, our facility serves as a dedicated hub for practical West African apiculture—offering immersive workshops tailored to every skill level, farm scale, and hive-craft interest.
Our Beekeeping Workshop Offerings
Basics of Modern Langstroth Beekeeping Workshops
Ideal for landowners, agricultural entrepreneurs, and families considering beekeeping for the first time, this foundational workshop covers the essentials needed to launch your apiary with clarity. Our experienced specialists guide you through honey bee caste dynamics, precision Langstroth hive anatomy, site selection and ant/predator security, essential protective gear, and what to expect during your first year of colony buildup.
Beginner Hands-On Bee Yard Workshops
Designed for individuals ready to step into the apiary, this flagship workshop combines structured morning classroom instruction with supervised afternoon practice in our Ibadan bee yard. Participants learn how to pack and keep a cool smoker lit, open colonies calmly, read brood patterns (spotting fresh eggs, larvae, and capped worker brood), install a 5-frame nucleus colony, and perform routine inspections with complete confidence.
Advanced Colony Splitting & Queen Rearing Workshops
For established beekeepers looking to scale their hive numbers and improve colony genetics, our advanced masterclasses delve into walk-away and queen-right hive splitting, 5-frame nuc production, larval grafting into cell cups, starter-finisher colony management, and integrated pest management (IPM). You will leave equipped with proven techniques to multiply your apiary sustainably while maintaining gentle, high-yielding stocks.
Hygienic Honey Harvesting, Extraction & Grading Workshops
Focusing on the peak nectar flow and harvest period, this practical honey-house workshop covers moisture verification using a honey refractometer, fume-free super clearing, uncapping techniques that preserve drawn comb, radial stainless-steel centrifugal extraction, and food-grade filtration. Learn how to bottle crystal-clear, unheated raw honey that meets premium domestic and export standards.
Dry-Season (Harmattan) & Rainy-Season Colony Management Workshops
West Africa’s distinct tropical wet seasons and dry Harmattan winds pose unique challenges compared to temperate climates. This specialized workshop teaches proactive strategies to prevent colony absconding, optimize hive tilt and upper ventilation during heavy downpours, manage dearth-period pollen and syrup feeding, and protect combs against Small Hive Beetles (SHB) and wax moths.
Pure Beeswax Alchemy, Candle Making & Value-Addition Workshops
Raw honey is only the beginning of a profitable apiary. Our interactive Make & Take craft workshops teach you how to render and filter golden cappings wax, pour clean-burning 100% beeswax pillar and container candles, formulate nourishing shea-beeswax skin balms and propolis tinctures, and ferment small-batch honey beverages.
In addition to our scheduled beekeeping workshops, we provide comprehensive resources to support your ongoing apiculture journey:
- Educational Apiary Blog: Our Beekeeping Blog features practical field guides on pest prevention, queen rearing, and seasonal colony management across Nigeria.
- Commercial-Grade Beekeeping Supplies: Browse our complete Products A–Z Collections for precision Langstroth woodenware, ventilated protective suits, stainless-steel extractors, and live Nucs & Traceable Queens.
- School & Cooperative Field Days: We regularly host guided educational excursions for primary and secondary schools, university faculties, and agricultural cooperatives where beekeepers connect, learn, and grow together.
