Free Tools & Resources for Beekeepers
Interactive apiary calculators engineered by Sandalwood Apiaries to help hobbyist and commercial beekeepers mix exact feeding syrup ratios, schedule walk-away splits, plan queen grafting calendars, and track post-swarm colony recovery.
Need to mix sugar syrup for feeding your bees? Our calculator can help you determine the correct amount of sugar and water to combine.
If you are planning to make a walk away split, this calculator can help you figure out when your new queen should emerge, go on mating flights, and when you can look for new eggs.
Interested in grafting your own queens? This calculator can help you pin down all the important dates, from the time when you set up your cell builder, all the way through queen mating flights.
If you know the date your colony swarmed, this calculator can help you determine when your new queen should get mated and when you can start looking for eggs again.
Detailed 40-day calendar of events for rearing queen bees. Calculate every milestone based on either the day the queen laid eggs or your grafting day.
How Our Free Beekeeping Calculators Improve Colony Survival & Honey Yields?
Successful apiculture depends on working in harmony with the biological clock of the honey bee (Apis mellifera). A single day’s miscalculation when transferring ripe queen cells or inspecting a newly mated queen can trigger queen balling, absconding, or secondary swarming.
1. Precision Sugar Syrup Mixing (1:1 & 2:1 Ratios)
During the August rainfall break or peak Harmattan dearth, colonies without supplemental carbohydrates rapidly consume brood stores and may abscond. Our Sugar Syrup Calculator converts between Imperial (lbs, gallons, quarts, cups) and Metric (kg, liters, mL) instantly so you mix the exact concentration for comb drawing (1:1) or dearth storage (2:1).
2. Walk-Away Split Biological Timeline
Dividing strong colonies is the most economical way to expand your apiary. By inputting your split date, our Walk Away Split Calculator maps the 12-day queen emergence countdown from a 24-hour worker larva, orientation flights, mating windows, and the 7-day broodless mite-treatment opportunity.
3. Commercial & Sideline Queen Grafting Calendar
Whether you use a Cloake board or a starter-finisher cell builder at your bee yard, our Grafting Date Calculator tracks every milestone—including the critical Days +6 to +8 wing-development window when queen cells must never be jarred or tilted.
4. Post-Swarm Recovery & After-Swarm Prevention
When a primary swarm departs, the parent colony is left with capped queen cells that emerge in 7–8 days. Our Post-Swarm Calculator tells you the exact days to cull excess cells to prevent secondary casts, when not to disturb mating flights, and when to verify fresh worker eggs.
5. Complete 40-Day Queen Rearing Calendar
Track the full 40-day queen breeding timeline starting from either Day 01 (Day Queen Laid Eggs) or Day 04 (Grafting Day)—covering graft viability checks, capped cells, transferring cells to mating nucs, emergence, mating flights, egg and larvae verification, and Day 40 requeening.
Built for Nigerian, West African & Global Apiary Management
At Sandalwood Apiaries (Ibadan, Oyo State), we train hundreds of beginner and commercial beekeepers every season. One of the most common challenges new apiarists face is opening a queenless split or swarmed hive too early—or too late—because they lost track of the 16-day queen development cycle.
Bookmark this Free Tools & Resources Hub on your phone before heading to your out-apiaries. Every calculator works instantaneously and links directly to the exact woodenware, queen-rearing kits, and live colonies you need for each stage.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Beekeeping Calculators
Yes! The 16-day developmental biology of Queen Bees (3 days as an egg, 5.5 days as a fed larva, and 7.5 days as a capped pupa) and the physical sucrose displacement of 1:1 and 2:1 sugar syrup apply across all Apis mellifera colonies. In hot tropical weather (30°C–36°C), ripe queen cells can emerge up to 12 hours earlier, which is why our calculators schedule cell transfer on Day +10 (Day 13 from egg).
Use 1:1 syrup (equal weight of white cane sugar and warm water) whenever you want to stimulate brood rearing and help newly installed 5-Frame Nucleus Colonies, splits, or hived swarms draw out new beeswax foundation frames. Use 2:1 syrup (two parts sugar to one part hot water) when colonies need rapid emergency food reserves during heavy rainy-season dearth or peak Harmattan.
Whenever a colony is requeening via a walk-away split, queen cell, or natural swarm, there is a natural gap between when the old queen’s last worker brood emerges (Day 21 from egg) and when the new queen’s first worker brood is sealed (Day 9 from her first egg). During this broodless window, 100% of Varroa mites are riding on adult bees with zero capped brood to hide inside—making organic mite treatments maximally effective.
