Queen Rearing Calendar

Detailed calendar of events for rearing queen bees. Select your start date and whether you are counting from the day the queen laid eggs (Day 01) or grafting day (Day 04).

Complete 40-Day Queen Rearing Calendar Breakdown

Following a strict 40-day biological calendar ensures you never miss a critical queen-rearing step—from egg laying and larval grafting to cell capping, mating nuc introduction, and brood verification:

Day 01 — Eggs laid (Queen mother has laid eggs)

Your selected breeder queen lays fertilized eggs in clean worker comb or a Nicot/Jenter queen-rearing cassette. Fertilized eggs stand upright on the cell floor on Day 1, tilt at 45° on Day 2, and lie flat before hatching into larvae at the end of Day 3.

Day 04 — Grafting day (Graft one-day larvae into cell cups)

On Day 04, the eggs have just hatched into tiny translucent 12-to-24-hour-old worker larvae floating on royal jelly. Transfer these one-day-old larvae gently into cell cups and place your grafting frame into a well-fed, queenless starter/cell-builder colony.

Day 06 — Inspect grafts (Confirm the viability of your grafts)

48 hours after grafting, briefly inspect your cell bar frame. Accepted cups will be drawn out with fresh wax and packed with glistening white royal jelly.

Day 09 — Capped cells (Confirm queen cells have been capped)

Nurse bees seal the fully fed queen cells with porous wax cappings. Once capped on Day 09, cells enter their delicate pupal metamorphosis stage.

Day 13 — Move cells (Move capped queen cells into mating nucs)

Three days before emergence (Day 13 from egg / Day +9 from grafting), transfer ripe capped queen cells carefully into queenless mating nucs or cell protectors so the first emerging virgin does not destroy her sisters.

Day 16 & Day 18 — Emergence & Remove failed cells

Virgin queens emerge on Day 16. On Day 18, remove any empty or unemerged queen cups that failed to produce a viable virgin queen.

Day 22 — Mating flights (Mating flights commence)

After hardening their wings and taking orientation flights, virgin queens fly out to Drone Congregation Areas (DCAs) starting around Day 22 to mate with 12–20 drones.

Day 34, Day 37 & Day 40 — Check eggs, Check larvae & Re-queen

Check mating nucs for fresh upright eggs on Day 34 and confirm healthy worker larvae in royal jelly on Day 37. If a mating nuc still shows zero eggs or larvae by Day 40, re-queen or combine it immediately to prevent laying workers.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Queen Rearing Calendar

Choose ‘Day Queen Laid Eggs’ (Day 01) if you confined your breeder queen on an empty drawn frame or Jenter/Nicot box on a known date and want the calendar to tell you which day to graft (Day 04). Choose ‘Grafting Day’ if you are grafting 24-hour-old larvae today and want all subsequent dates calculated from Day 04 onward.
Queens emerge on Day 16 (and occasionally on late Day 15 in warm tropical weather). Moving ripe cells into individual mating nucs on Day 13 ensures the pupae are fully formed and hardened enough to handle gentle transport before the first virgin queen chews her way out.
Checking for eggs on Day 34 confirms the new queen survived her mating flights and started laying. Checking for pearly white worker larvae on Day 37 (and flat worker cappings shortly after) verifies that her eggs are fertilized and viable before you cage or sell the queen.
If a mating nuc has no eggs or larvae by Day 40, the virgin queen was likely lost to predators (such as bee-eaters or dragonflies) during her mating flight. Re-queen the nuc with a mated queen or unite it with a queenright colony using the newspaper method.
